Pharma firms set to get data exclusivity

NEW DELHI: Government is planning to allow data exclusivity to pharmaceutical companies, which may effectively offer a monopoly to the developer of a new drug, even without a patent and restrict cheaper versions of the drug for several years.

An inter-ministerial task force (when it meets on July 12) will consider two options – data protection and data exclusivity; which would have a far-reaching impact on the pharma industry.

Though a final decision is yet to be taken, sources said the scales are tipped in favour of granting data exclusivity, due to the lobbying by Big Pharma (mainly MNCs) and pressures imposed by the US.
