Merck & Co. Inc. is settling legal claims related to problems with its Vioxx drug for $4.85 billion.

The New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company announced the settlement Friday. The agreement includes Merck not admitting causation or fault with problems related to its Vioxx pain medications.

Merck pulled Vioxx from the market after problems arose, including some patients suffering strokes and having heart problems.

The settlement is between Merck and a number of law firms with thousands of plaintiffs. The settlement is applicable only to legal U.S. residents, according to a Merck statement.
